northumberlandscapes

A warm welcome to the northumberlandscapes web-site, which aims to recreate the experience of walking along the river valleys of Northumberland. Please don't hurry through the site. Take your time and imagine yourself into the photographs.

Copse near Goatstones Stobbylee Burn South West from Brough Law

This is a county that you cannot help but fall in love with. The low winter sun illuminates the land with a golden glow, delineating sharply the ridges and furrows of the tree trunks. Towering clouds pile high in a wide spring sky, casting drifting shadows onto the rolling hillsides. After a period of rainfall, the swollen burns rush and tumble down their rock-strewn beds, between slopes covered with bracken, russet in the autumnal light. A sinking sun transforms the river into a purple ribbon that snakes its way between fields inundated with snow. A stream gurgles and splashes beneath the dense foliage of trees, creating a grotto of peace and solitude.

Walking through these landscapes is a delight well worth sharing.

For a map of the rivers of Northumberland, click on the Rivers button. There, you can select a river that interests you, and then view its map. Click on a river section to see the relevant commentary, and click on a photo in the commentary to view its enlargement. Also, you can watch a slideshow of all the photos for each river, and purchase them as prints or cards in the online shop.

Or you can just explore, like taking a walk without a map, but keep an eye open for the bull.
