Rothbury Forest is, today, a forest in name only, as practically all the original trees have long since been felled. Land clearance and building development were the main causes.
The Forest was first enclosed in 1205, when it was given by King John to Robert Fitz-Roger, Baron of Warkworth, as a six mile square hunting preserve. Some families have lived and worked on the same farm for generations and are proud to be known as forest folk.
In my book of poems, stories and pictures, I have tried to portray some of the history, humour and beauty of The Forest today, after 800 years of evolution. A more comprehensive description and history is contained in the Foreword of the booklet, which is prefaced by His Grace The Duke of Northumberland.
